NCCCO written exam day: what to bring
Exam day goes better when the only thing on your mind is the exam. Most of what trips people up is logistics: the wrong site, a computer that fails its check, or arithmetic habits built for a calculator you cannot use. This page covers the parts of the day that are published, and tells you where to read your own confirmation for the rest.
Pick how you will test
NCCCO describes three ways to sit a written exam, and "online" does not always mean at home.
- Test center testing uses a professional testing-center computer setup.
- Event online testing usually brings a group to an authorized site, such as an employer or training provider.
- Online proctored testing uses your own internet-connected computer, watched by a live online proctor.
You find locations and event listings through your myCCO account. Our scoring and locations guide shows how to compare them. Book the exact exams you need, then confirm the address, date, start time and exams included before you arrange time off.

Choose an answer to begin
Before the day
Open your scheduling confirmation and read it twice. It is the source for your ID requirements, arrival time and rules for your site, and those details can change, so do not rely on a forum post or an older brochure.
If you chose online proctored testing, run the equipment check on the exact computer, webcam, microphone and connection you will use on test day, not on a spare machine. A work laptop that blocks software installs is the classic surprise, so settle that days ahead. Pick a room where you will not be interrupted for the whole exam.
For a test center or event, work out the drive, parking and a margin for traffic the day before.
Calculator rules by exam
This is the rule that changes how you prepare.
| Exam | Questions | Time | Calculator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | 95 | 90 minutes | Not permitted |
| LAT, TLL, TSS specialty | 28 | 60 minutes | Permitted |
| Service truck crane | 80 | 90 minutes | Not permitted |
Those figures come from the current Mobile Crane Operator Candidate Handbook from NCCCO. If you sit Core and a specialty on the same day, you switch from hand math to calculator math between exams. Your confirmation tells you what the site expects you to use for the specialty, so check it before you pack.
Because the Core has no calculator, practice subtraction, multiplication and percentages on paper until they are automatic. Load chart math without a calculator shows the habits.
Pace the clock
Core gives you 90 minutes for 95 questions, about 57 seconds each. A specialty gives you 60 minutes for 28, a little over two minutes each, because its questions lean on chart work.
A simple plan for Core: do a first pass and answer what you know quickly, flag the chart problems that need several steps, and return to them with the time you banked. Check the 45-minute mark: you should be near question 48. Keep your last few minutes for flagged items, not for rereading ones you were sure about. The Core written exam guide covers the format and timing.
When you finish
NCCCO lists results as coming back immediately, so you learn where you stand when you are done. Do not read your score as a percentage. A scaled score is not a count of right answers, as the scoring guide explains.
Whatever the result, write down topics, never questions, while your memory is fresh. Candidates agree not to share exam content, and topic notes are all a study plan needs.
If it goes wrong
- Technical trouble online: tell the proctor right away and follow their instructions. Do not try to fix it on your own mid-exam.
- Wrong site or time: contact NCCCO or your testing site as soon as you notice, using the contact details in your confirmation.
- You fail: NCCCO asks you to wait four weeks before retaking the same written exam. The retakes and 12-month window guide has the detail, and what to do after a failed written turns the wait into a plan.
Exam day checklist
- Scheduling confirmation, with address, date and start time
- The ID and any documents your confirmation asks for
- Test route planned, or equipment check done on your own computer
- A quiet room and a cleared desk, if you test online
- Paper-and-pencil arithmetic practiced, for Core
- Calculator plan checked against your confirmation, for a specialty
- Water, food and a good night's sleep
FAQ
Can I use a calculator on the NCCCO written exam?
Not on the Core, which is 95 questions in 90 minutes. The LAT, TLL and TSS specialty exams permit one. Read your confirmation for what the site allows.
Can I take the NCCCO written exam from home?
NCCCO describes online proctored testing on your own computer with a live proctor. Check that it is offered for your exams when you schedule, and run the equipment check first.
How soon do I get my result?
NCCCO lists results as immediate. If you do not pass, the four-week wait before retaking the same written exam starts from there. ## Walk in with a number, not a hope The best exam-day prep is knowing which domain will cost you points.
